Angioplasty

Angioplasty which is also referred to as percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, or PTA) is a procedure in which a a flexible and thin tube is inserted in an artery and guided to the place where the artery is narrowed, with the help of a small balloon inflated at the end of the tube the pressure from the inflated balloon against the wall of the artery allows the blood flow to improve.

In the angioplasty of the aorta which is the major abdominal artery or the iliac arteries that branch off from the aorta, a small tube called Stent is often used as the reclosure of the artery is less likely to occur if a Stent has been used. Stent is usually used in angioplasty of smaller leg arteries such as popliteal, tibial arteries or femoral.
